Hello Howe Parents and Students,

My name is Sandra Davis and I am proud to say that I am a product of Minneapolis Schools which in my day were:  Emerson (K - 8); Jefferson Junior High (gr. 9); and West High (gr. 10 - 12). My college career includes Mankato State College (French and English), Concordia College Moorhead for French,  and Hamline University for English as a Second Language (ESL) so I am certified to teach French and ESL to grades K - 12. I have also taken many courses to ensure that my teaching strategies remain current.  This is my 17th year with Minneapolis and my 1st year at Howe.

This year, I will provide Title 1 support to grades 3 - 5 in reading, math, science and social studies which means that I will assist any students in small group settings with their individual academic needs.  I will provide ESL support for students in grades 3 - 5.   Our school curriculum is the Readers' and Writers' Workshop, Good Habits, Great Readers and Investigations Math.  Because students come to school with varying academic abilities, Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), a proven ESL strategy, is regularly employed.  As a placement guideline, we use the results of the Fountas and Pinnell assessment process.  WIDA Can Do Descriptors and the ACCESS test help us to establish learning targets for English Language Learners.  Because we begin at their level we can fill in their learning gaps and progress them more rapidly.  To assist with remedial math needs, we use Focus in Math, Investigations Math and IXL.

Please know that I welcome any input that you parents/guardians can provide on your students.  I can be reached by e-mail at Sandra.Davis@mpls.k12.mn.us or before 8:45 a.m. or between 3:00 and 3:45 p.m. at 612 668-4640.   Please contact me with any questions or concerns including how you can support your student at home.  Thank you.  Let's make this a GREAT year for OUR students!!!
