Dear parents, students and staff of Hiawatha,

I have taught at Minneapolis public Schools since 1987.I  attended Ball State University in Indiana for my M.A. in education. I received my ESL teaching license from Hamline University.My first training in teaching abroad was in 1969 in France at Ecole Normale des Filles at Bordeaux . I attended  Universite de Talence , Bordeaux , France for Social Studies at the same year.

This year , I will be working with K-2 ESL students both in classes with mainstream teachers , and in small support group as “Pull Out”I  work in room 104. I have worked in Minneapolis  as French, Bilingual and ESL teacher. My experience working with k-12  is over 30 years. I am looking forward to work with students to improve their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, and above all , to support teachers preparing students to achieve their math and reading goals. English Language Learner (ELL)

 The majority of our students is Latino, but we also have some Somali, and  Lao students.

Program Goals:

*To assist ELL students in achieving academic success in 4 modalities:  Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.


To help our ELL students attain grade level standards and necessary life skills.

To increase students' use of skills and strategies to comprehend vocabulary in all academic areas.

To encourage lifelong learning

To increase students' achievement in reading, language arts, Investigations Math, science, and social studies, we will use a variety of Shelterd Instruction Observation Protocol(SIOP) strategies as well as other proven methods of success.

To monitor students  progress, we will use a variety of assessment tools.


2 English as a Second Language (ESL)  teachers, both are multilingual

Ms. Banlang Phommasouvanh works with grades  K-2.

Mrs. Sandy Davis works with grades 3-5.

 Ms. Colleen  Larson assists Latino parents  with registration and any concerns parents have relative to school. She also assists teachers and students in Readers and Writers Workshop as well as Guided Math.

8:25-8:55 @ door 8  to greet Kindergaten and grade 1 students

9:00-9:30:00  Support ELL students  ,grade 1 , Collaborative Time Reader's / Writer's 

9:30- 10:00  Support ELL grade 1 PULL-OUT to room 104 (Academic Language in science, math & social studies)

10:00-10:30.  Support   ELL Kindergarten students for 117

1o:30-11:30 Preparation

11:30-12:25   Kindergarden from 113&119 Literacy, math talk & sciece vocabulary

12:30-1:00  Lunch

 1:15-1:45    Teach academic language to grade 2 ELL from 103, 101 & 105

1:45-2:15 ELD to new comers from 101

2:15-2:55 PUSH-IN to room 111 grade 1 (science & social studies)

2:55-3:20 Students dismissal at door 8.


Lead ELL Time(To complete OCR required paper work on Waiver Review,Exit and Exit Monitor.To provide training at the building level. To meet with principal and ELL Team to disseminate information from ELL Department, and participate in scheduling of services to ELL students.)
